O

So, to kick off the inaugural entry with the movie I saw tonight: O. I should begin by mentioning that O is a modernized version of Shakespeare's "Othello". I note this because I've become very leery of Shakespearean plays set in modern times - by modern times, of course I mean here and now, as opposed to more than half a century ago. The fault of this being a certain movie ::cough:: Romeo + Juliet ::cough:: which was poorly planned, hideously acted but would have been almost decent if the cast didn't scream most of their lines.

All this being said, O was actually a good movie. Not a great movie... it tended to drag a little, but it was good. And I was pleasantly surprised to find that it followed the story of Othello almost to the letter (I say almost because I can't be completely certain of whether or not the Cassio character died or not, though he was beaten and shot). The acting was decent, the game scenes (Odin - our Othello, Hugo - our Iago, and Michael - our Cassio are all on the basketball team of a South Carolina prep school) were dizzily fast paced and well done. The music contrast, which went back and forth between opera and gangsta rap was well done.

Martin Sheen was a very convincing basket ball coach... In the moments when I choose to remember that I once played, I seem to recall some of my coaches behaving that way... he also plays one asshole of a father (he's Hugo's dad).

All in all, if you are a fan of "Othello", I recommend seeing this. And if you are a fan of the play, I can't really spoil very much of the movie, because you already know what's going to happen... Of course anyone who hasn't read or heard of the play will be surprised and might be turned off a bit by the ending. Actually, I should note that of all the people in the theater tonight, it's a safe bet that only Peanut, Esowolf and myself had ever actually read the play. A conclusion we came to with much disappointment in the human race.
